That seems to be the trend anyway. If you're a German online shop, 95 percent of your customers are located in--guess what--Germany. However, in the UK, the reverse is true.
The majority of customers for UK online stores are outside the UK, coming from America, Asia, and other international locales. My assumption is that these commerce sites have content written in English, making it accessible for international customers. A German site is less likely to attract international visitors because not as many people know German. Either that, or the Brits are really good at
global eCommerce.Other little tidbits from The Pago Report 2008:
- No true Christmas season in UK online businesses (unlike the US where Christmas/Holiday seasonal shopping results in a spike in retail and online sales in comparison to the rest of the year)
- Fewer online transactions by British consumers during weekends
- Brits buy online during office (work) hours (it looks like eCommerce has replaced klondike solitaire)
- Credit card transactions dominate Euro eCommerce
- More reliance on new payment methods for European eCommerce (The ECF itself supports multiple payment options)
